'In the interest of public health': El Paso restaurant temporarily closes due to COVID

An El Paso restaurant has temporarily closed its doors due to COVID-19.

Piedmont Cafe, located at 4172 N. Mesa St., posted the closure on Facebook Friday morning.

"We received news that one of our employees tested positive for COVID-19. The employee last worked Jan. 5th and is currently quarantined. Another two employees are now experiencing symptoms and are awaiting test results."

COVID-19 cases are once again rising in El Paso County. The omicron variant of the coronavirus, which appears to spread more quickly than previous variants but results in milder disease, is fueling the surge across the nation.

Active COVID-19 cases as of Saturday morning in El Paso are 9,442, with 702 new cases, 462 patients hospitalized, and 132 in ICU.

"Making this decision is not easy for us as some of our employees hoped to keep working to meet their financial obligations. However, in the interest of public health and the well-being of all of our staff, we arrived at the decision to close temporarily."

The will be deep cleaned and sanitized during the restaurant's closure.

The city of El Paso'sDepartment of Public Health issued updated recommendations for isolation and quarantine for people infected with COVID-19.

The department's guidelines align with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's updated guidance.

Everyone with presumed or confirmed COVID-19 infections should stay home and isolate themselves from other people for at least five full days. Day zero is considered the first day of symptoms or the date the positive result was received for asymptomatic individuals.

Individuals should wear a face covering when around others at home and in public for an additional five days.

The restaurant hopes to open its doors on Jan. 12, according to its Facebook page.
