COVID-19 outbreak halts largely unvaccinated Indiana Law Enforcement Academy class

Indianapolis Star - 7/28/2021

An outbreak of COVID-19 among students has temporarily suspended this year's Indiana Law Enforcement Academy class, according to state officials.

Ten students have tested positive and nine had inconclusive tests as of Wednesday morning, according to the Law Enforcement Training Board. The academy trains many of the state's police officers.

Another 50 students are either isolating or in quarantine for showing symptoms or because they had close contact with a positive case.

The majority of the 117 students are unvaccinated, the Law Enforcement Training Board said in a news release. Unvaccinated people account for more than 98% of new COVID-19 cases in Indiana, according to the state health department.

A restart date for the academy's class in Plainfield has not been set.

Officials said the state health department will provide protocols for cohorting students and masking requirements for the academy.
