DOH: COVID-19 outbreak at SCI Camp Hill leads to 393 new cases for Cumberland County Saturday

The Sentinel - 2/28/2021

Feb. 28—Fueled by an outbreak of COVID-19 cases at the State Correctional Institution Camp Hill, the state Department of Health reported 393 new cases of COVID-19 and two deaths for Cumberland County in Saturday's data release.

The DOH dashboard for state prisons shows 237 active COVID-19 cases at the prison as of Thursday — 206 inmates and 31 employees. The dashboard reports three inmate deaths and one employee death. The state prison is located in the Camp Hill ZIP code (17011), which reported an increase of 324 new cases in Saturday's update.

Pa. Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel discussed the COVID-19 outbreak at the prison during an abc27 "This Week in Pennsylvania" pre-taped interview, abc27 reported.

Wetzel told abc27 that after mass testing inmates at the facility he expects the number of cases to increase in the next few days as more tests come back.

The DOC showed a total population of 2,165 at the prison, which serves as the diagnostic and classification center for all male inmates entering the state prison system, as of January.

"As you know, Camp Hill is our reception facility, so new people coming off the street, we get a lot more COVID," Wetzel said. "We test everybody."

Saturday's report for Cumberland County included 1,060 total test results, with 15 new probables. Comparing just the number of negative tests (667) and confirmed positive tests (378), the county saw about 36% of its tests come back positive.

With the spike in cases, the county's seven-day average of cases now jumps to 97.43 and its 14-day per capita rate jumps to 435.73.

There were 58 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the county in Saturday report, with nine in intensive care units and seven on ventilators.

As of Saturday's data, the Health Department says 14,052 partial vaccines have been administered in Cumberland County, with 10,370 full vaccines (both doses) administered, marking the first day with more than 10,000 people completely vaccinated.

In the southcentral region for Saturday, York County reported 105 new cases and one death, Dauphin County reported 78 cases and three deaths, and Franklin County reported 30 cases and one death.
