Rashod Bateman opts out again at Minnesota

Tifton Gazette - 11/26/2020

Nov. 26--MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second time in 2020, Rashod Bateman has opted to end his college football career.

The former Tift County Blue Devil announced his decision Wednesday on Twitter.

"After further dialogue with Coach (P.J.) Fleck and my family, we decided that after this most recent Covid 19 outbreak and the cancelation of this weekend's game, that it made the most sense to begin to focus on the next stage of my career," said Bateman in a statement on his official account.

"Minnesota has changed me forever and the lessons I learned in the Row The Boat culture will stay with me for the rest of my life. There is no better coach to play for in the nation than Coach Fleck and I appreciate everything he has done for me. I can't thank my coaches enough for always supporting me and for always pushing me to change my best each day.

"With that being said, I am excited for everything I can, and will do, to be a positive influence in this community that has welcomed me with open arms. None of it goes unnoticed. I know I have a ton to be thankful for, and I wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday.

"Minnesota, I love you."

Bateman, a junior for the Golden Gophers, caught 36 passes in five games this season for 472 yards and two touchdowns. He was leading the team in all three categories.

Minnesota was to have played Wisconsin Saturday in the annual battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe, but that game was canceled. The Gophers are 2-3 this season.

Bateman initially opted out of the 2020 college football season in August before changing his mind at the end of September.

He is considered one of the top wide receiver prospects in the nation and is a potential first round NFL draft pick in 2021.
