New York Gov. Cuomo praises ’heroes’ of COVID ’battle’ on Labor Day

The New York Daily News - 9/7/2020

Workers got a shoutout for their role in handling the coronavirus crisis in Labor Day remarks from Gov. Cuomo.

“New York State will go down in the history books as the place that beat back COVID,” he said in a video released Monday. “And when they write those history books, the heroes of the battle will be the hardworking families of New York.”

The comments came as the state marked a month with a COVID infection rate reported below 1%, according to the governor’s office.

Even with the outbreak apparently under control, New York State still has the highest death toll in the country -- 25,361 fatalities as of Sunday, not including cases in which the victim had not been diagnosed with the virus before their death.

“The heroes of the COVID war are not the elite. They’re not the most well off. The heroes were the hardworking, talented and principled women and men of labor,” Cuomo said, lavishing praise upon transportation workers, first responders and others.

“In my book, they have always been the heroes because they have always been essential to building this nation,” added the governor, who recently got a deal to write a non-metaphorical book about the coronavirus crisis.
