Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin touts limited spending deal to keep government running

The New York Daily News - 9/6/2020

A deal between the White House and Congress would fund the federal government through the start of December, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Sunday, though additional stimulus funding to help Americans reeling from the coronavirus outbreak remains up in the air.

With funding for the federal government set to expire Sept. 30, he touted a bare-bones “continuing resolution” on funding that would prevent another government shutdown.

“We’re going to move forward with a clean [continuing resolution], hopefully through the beginning of December,” Mnuchin was quoted by Reuters as saying at the White House. “I hope by the end of the week, we’ll have something firmed up.”

Last week, congressional aides confirmed a deal has been made, but details are yet to emerge.

Mnuchin said he and President Trump want to do another round of stimulus spending, too, though Democrats and Republicans have been unable to come to an agreement since the last round was passed earlier this summer.

“The president and I believe we should do more stimulus,” Mnuchin said on “Fox News Sunday.” “We have about 7.5 million jobs we need to get back until we’re back to where we were, and we want to help small businesses, we want to help businesses that are particularly impacted by this and we’ll continue to work on proposed new legislation.”
