Tahina products recalled because of potential salmonella contamination

A Michigan company has issued a recall of tahina products because they may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Five Star Food Inc. of Garden City has recalled 100 cases of Excellent Tahina in 800 gram packages and 100 cases of Excellent Tahina in 400 gram packages, according to an announcement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The product was distributed in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Florida, North Dakota, Virginia and Texas.

According to the announcement, the Sham Gardens Tahini in the recall are:

Excellent Tahina 800 g., UPC 6214002717420, best by November 2020

Excellent Tahina, 400 g., UPC 6214002717413, best by November 2020

The problem was discovered, according to the announcement, during a random sampling by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

No illnesses have been reported.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause infection that can be fatal to young children, frail or elderly people or people with weakened immune systems.

Someone infected with salmonella may have symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
