Funding to help reduce health disparities, analyze telehealth programs

Sept. 06--The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded $1,384,000 to West Virginia University.

The funding will support research intended to help reduce health disparities among West Virginians and analyze the effectiveness of telehealth programs.

"Health professionals work every day to educate their neighbors about the dangers of certain behaviors, such as smoking, and to promote best practices intended to improve the health of West Virginians," said U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore, R-W.Va. "Academic research is critical to informing these efforts, and the work being done at WVU helps ensure public health officials have the information necessary to make a positive impact in our communities."

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., added, "Cutting edge research is an important part of ensuring the overall health of our state is improving. This research leads to healthier, happier and more productive West Virginian."

Individual awards are as follows:

--$1,034,000 to the West Virginia University Research Corporation through the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research Centers program.

--$350,000 to the West Virginia University Research Corporation through the Evidence-Based Tele-Emergency Network Grant Program (EB TNGP).
