BRIEF: DEC issues another air quality health advisory

Niagara Gazette - 7/2/2018

July 02--The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued another air quality health advisory for Western New York.

The latest advisory will be in effect 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. today.

The DEC and the state Department of Health issue air quality health advisories when meteorologists anticipate levels of pollution -- either ozone or fine particulate matter -- to present a greater health concern for young children, individuals performing strenuous outdoor work or activities, the elderly and those who have respiratory diseases such as asthma.

Individuals in these categories are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor physical activity when ozone levels are the highest, generally afternoon to early evening. When outdoor levels of ozone are elevated, going indoors will usually reduce exposure. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing should consider consulting their doctor, according to the DEC.
