Hemp, pollinators, aluminum toxicity highlight field days at DREC, HREC

An exciting crops tour will be held on July 10 at Hettinger Research Extension Center.

Beginning at 3 p.m. and going to 4:30 p.m., John Rickertsen, HREC, said there will be a patch burn grazing event - a presentation on cattle, wildlife, and pollinators, followed by the main crop tours from 5-7 p.m. with supper at 7 p.m. in agronomy lab (all times Mountain)

Industrial hemp, pea leaf weevil and aluminum toxicity highlight field days at NDSU's Dickinson Research Extension Center.

In 2018, Burton Johnson will be speaking at DREC field days on July 11.

Johnson, one of the first in North Dakota to envision a time when the state's producers would grow hemp, will be speaking at 10 a.m. Producers will find a wealth of information coming from Burton at the event.

What else is at Dickinson's field day?

Registration is at 8:30 a.m., followed by a weed identification open table.

Welcome (Kris Ringwall, director, and Ryan Buetow, agronomy) with a presentation on the exciting projects at DREC this year, including teff grass, aluminum toxicity, small grains and soybeans.

At 9:10 a.m., Jon Stika will talk on "What is healthy soil?"

At 10 a.m. is Johnson and hemp.

At 10:35 a.m. is a presentation by Jan Knodel, plant pathologist, on alfalfa weevils. Weevils have been found in high numbers this year.

At 11:05, Hector Carcamo, entomologist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will speak on pea leaf weevil background and management. Carcamo is coming down from Canada and has a strong agronomist background.
