Gehl Foods nacho cheese linked to fatal botulism

Germantown-Menomonee Falls NOW - 5/25/2017

GERMANTOWN - Testing has confirmed the botulism outbreak that killed one California man and left at least nine others hospitalized was in a nacho-cheese dip distributed by Gehl Foods.

The dip was sold at a suburban Sacramento gas station.

In a statement from Eric Beringause, CEO of Gehl Foods, he said Gehl's facilities remain safe for food production.

"We are aware of the isolated botulism outbreak connected to a gas station in Walnut Grove, California, and are praying for the individuals battling the illness and their families," Beringause said. "We are working closely with federal, state and local health authorities to determine what caused the specific outbreak on site."

According to the California Department of Public Health, there is no ongoing risk to the public.

In the 121-year history of Gehl Foods, the company has never had to recall a food product.
