Smoked salmon recalled because of botulism threat

Patriot-News - 11/7/2019

Smoked salmon sold between March 6 and Sept. 17 of this year in 23 states including Pennsylvania has been recalled.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the company, Mill Stream Corp. (Sullivan Harbor Farm) of Hancock, Maine, is voluntarily recalling ten lots of cold smoked salmon “because it has the potential to be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.”

Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble speaking or swallowing.

No illnesses have been reported.

According to the company, the recall was issued because the salmon’s water phase salt tested below 3.5 percent. That means the salmon must remain frozen until ready to eat. Thawed salmon stored in the refrigerator could be contaminated.

The salmon was sold in vacuum sealed packages in 2 pound, 1 pound, 8 ounce and 4 ounce packages with the following lot numbers on the back of the package - 7049, 7050, 7051, 7052, 7054, 7056, 7058, 7060, 7062, 7066.

The salmon was sold online and through retail and wholesale outlets in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Utah, Iowa, Tennessee, Minnesota, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Washington, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, Michigan and Texas.

For more information, call Mill Stream Corp. at 207-266-0621, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
