Worcester County man latest vaping death in the state

Telegram & Gazette - 11/6/2019

A Worcester County man in his 50s is the third person in the state to die of a vaping-associated lung injury.

The state Department of Public health announced Wednesday that the man had been vaping nicotine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), an ingredient found in marijuana. His was among 200 suspected cases of vaping lung injury in Massachusetts reported to the state since September, when clinicians in the state were mandated to report any unexplained lung injury in a patient with a history of vaping.

Of the 200 cases, 127 met the criteria for investigation. Of the investigations that have been completed, 21 confirmed cases and 47 probably cases have been reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last month a woman in her 40s from Middlesex County and a woman in her 60s from Hampshire County died from a vaping-associated lung injury. Both vaped nicotine.

DPH has not released the identity or hometown of the latest victim.
