Drive in, roll up your sleeve and get a free flu shot in Orlando

Orlando Sentinel - 10/30/2019

The Orange County health department is offering a free drive-thru flu shot clinic on Saturday, Nov. 2, for everyone six months and older.

The clinic also offers hepatitis A vaccine for adults.

The clinic will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Freedom High School, located at 2500 W. Taft Vineland Rd.

Although flu activity is still low in Florida and nationwide, two children with the flu have died this month. During the last flu season, 138 children died.

No deaths have been reported in Florida so far this season.

Health officials recommend for everyone six months and older to get the flu vaccine every year.

They also recommend that pregnant women get the flu shot any time during pregnancy and the whooping cough (Tdap) vaccine early in the third trimester.

The vaccinations help protect the babies in the first few months of life before they can get their own vaccines, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the latest data shows that about two in three pregnant women don’t receive both vaccines.

About 45% of adults and 63% of the kids got a flu shot last year. The most vaccinated adult population were seniors, 68% of whom got the vaccine, according to the CDC.

Last year’s flu season was record-breaking in duration but not severity, according to the CDC. Nearly 170 million doses of flu vaccine were distributed last year, also a record.

So far this year about 77 million doses of flu vaccine have been distributed in the U.S. according to the CDC.
