Metal in chicken patties sent to schools causes almost 18 tons of patties to be recalled

March 14-- Mar. 14--About 35,870 pounds, or 17.9 tons, of breaded chicken patties that went to schools in Puerto Rico have been recalled because they might have pieces of metal.

The not-food-in-your-food recall was announced Thursday by the USDA. Manufacturer Productos La Aguadillana told The Herald via email cafeteria workers in two schools found the metal Friday during the prep process and no students were served chicken with metal.

"We have decided to withdraw preemptively any remaining inventory that could still be at school sites from the affected lots," Aguadillana President Luis Alvarez said in the email. "Of the 197,000 pieces of product that could be served in the dining halls that day, two isolated incidents is more than enough for our company take security actions necessary to ensure the welfare of our children and youth who have spent more than five years consuming our products."

Aguadillana took care to note this did not affect their food sold in supermarkets or to restaurants. The USDA's recall notice took care to note the chicken patties came to the schools "from a commercial sale and was not part of food provided by USDA for the National School Lunch Program."
